Walk down the anchor aisle and you see half a dozen shapes that all claim to hold your boat. A flat folding one, a heavy triangle with a curved plate, something that looks like three fingers, a lump of coated iron, and a folding thing with four hooks. None of the packaging tells you the part that matters, which is that each of those shapes was designed for a different kind of ground.

Fluke Anchors, the Danforth Shape
A fluke anchor has two large flat plates hinged to a shank. As the rode comes tight and pulls horizontally, the plates tip down, catch, and pull themselves under the surface. In sand and firm mud that produces a lot of holding power for very little anchor weight, which is why this is the standard hook on bowriders, center consoles and aluminum fishing boats.
Its weakness is the swing. When wind or current turns the boat through a large angle, the pull on a buried fluke can lift it out, and it has to trip and reset. It also struggles in heavy weed, where the plates ride on top of the grass instead of cutting through it, and it has almost nothing to offer on rock.
Plow and Claw Anchors
Plow and claw anchors are the generalists. A plow, the Delta and CQR family, has a single curved blade that noses into the bottom and buries as load comes on. A claw, best known as the Bruce shape, has three fixed tines that spread the load and find purchase in mixed ground. Both are more forgiving than a fluke when the boat swings.
Where They Beat a Fluke
In mixed bottoms, in weed, in gravel and rubble, and any time the load direction changes repeatedly. A claw in particular tends to roll and reset rather than pull clean out, which is exactly what you want on a tidal current change or an evening wind shift.
Where They Cost You
Both take up more room than a folded fluke and neither stows flat in a locker, which is a real objection on a trailerable boat with a shallow anchor compartment. In clean sand, a claw generally gives up holding power to a fluke of the same weight, so on a pure sand lake the fluke is still the efficient choice.
Box Anchors and River Anchors
These two exist because some boats do not behave like a sailboat on a long rode. A box anchor folds flat for storage and opens into a rigid cage that drops vertically and sets on its own weight, so it needs far less line out than a burying anchor and is far less upset by a boat that swings broadside.
A river anchor is the vinyl coated shape with a flat plate and prongs, meant for soft mud, silt and slow current, and often used from small jon boats and utility boats. Both are heavy for their holding power compared with a fluke, which is the price of a shape that does not depend on a long horizontal pull to work.
Grapnel and Mushroom Anchors
A grapnel is a folding set of hooks on a shank. It has one job, which is to catch rock, rubble, coral or structure, and it does that job better than any burying anchor. On sand or mud it has close to nothing to grab and should not be anybody’s primary anchor on a family boat.
A mushroom is dead weight with a rounded bell that gradually silts in and holds through suction on a soft bottom. Small versions are sold for dinghies and small utility boats. The serious versions are permanent mooring hardware that only reach full holding power after they settle into the bottom over time.

Why the Right Type Still Drags
Type is only half the story. An anchor needs a nearly horizontal pull to set, and that comes from scope, meaning the ratio of rode you have out to the depth of the water plus your bow height. With too little line out, the rode angles up and lifts the shank instead of driving the flukes down, and even the correct anchor for that bottom will skip.
Manufacturers publish this. Fortress specifies a minimum scope of five to one along with six to twelve feet of chain in its rode guidance, and other makers publish comparable figures for their own anchors. If your anchor keeps dragging on a bottom it should suit, check the amount of line out before you blame the shape.
