Start With the Fuel System

Fuel goes first because the treated fuel has to circulate before the engine gets shut down for the season. Add a marine fuel stabilizer at the dose printed on the bottle, top the tank up to limit the air space where condensation forms, then run the engine long enough for treated fuel to reach the carburetor bowls or injectors.

Ethanol is the reason marine fuel treatments exist as a separate category. Gasoline blended with ethanol attracts water, and the EPA publishes at epa.gov that E15 is not approved for use in marine engines, which is why the pump label matters as much as the additive. Look for a treatment sold specifically for marine use rather than a generic lawn equipment stabilizer.


Flush and Fog the Engine

With treated fuel running, connect a flush attachment and run fresh water through the cooling passages, especially after a salt water season. Then follow your manual on fogging oil, which coats cylinder walls and prevents surface corrosion while the engine sits. Some modern engines have their own fogging procedure, and a few do not want it at all.

Drain Every Water Passage You Can Reach

Water expands when it freezes, and it does not care how thick the casting around it is. Pull the hull drain plug and leave it out. Tilt an outboard fully down so the gearcase and water pump drain by gravity, and leave it in that position for storage. Open the block and manifold drains on a sterndrive if your manual identifies them.

Then work through everything else that holds water: livewell and baitwell plumbing, washdown pumps, the freshwater tank and lines, the head if you have one, and the bilge itself. Anything with a low spot can hold enough water to crack a fitting.


Where Marine Antifreeze Goes

Non-toxic propylene glycol marine antifreeze is the backup for passages that will not drain completely, and for plumbing you cannot blow out. It is pumped or poured through the system until colored fluid comes out the other end. Every jug carries a burst rating on the label, so buy by that rating rather than by color.

Marine antifreeze is not the same product as automotive ethylene glycol coolant, which is toxic and does not belong anywhere it can reach the water. If your engine is closed cooled, the coolant loop itself is a separate service item and your manual specifies which product to use in it.

Pull the battery, clean the terminals, and store it somewhere it will not freeze while staying on a maintainer if your charger supports that mode.
